As Silver Cross went from strength to strength, William decided to open a purpose built factory in White House Street. Unfortunately our first official factory didn’t last long, because in the same year it burnt down. Undeterred by this William decided to build a much bigger and better factory in 1898, which became known as the ‘Silver Cross Works’.

With a growing reputation for quality product at a fair price William and the new Silver Cross brand, supplemented their income from the more modern style premabulators which had a relatively small market restricted to well-off families. To develop their version of the ‘mail cart’ design popular with the general public. As the name suggest the design was based entirely on the delivery carts used by the Royal Mail.

William was always looking at ways to improve designs, it was in 1894 he took out a patent for slotted handles that could be moved up and down. The forerunner for the adjustable handles we find on every pram system today.

The death of Queen Victoria in 1901 marked a significant change in British life and culture. The sombre tones of the Victorian period were dropped in favour of much brighter contrasting colours and these were often included in the designs. Although there was still a great divide between rich and poor, a newly emerging middle class were growing in self-confidence.

It was this new market that William identified as the market to buy his new permabulators. A pram was still an expensive purchase, so William allowed re-payments over many years, hire purchase or the ‘never never’ as it was popularly known, transformed the purchasing power of ordinary people.

Now well established in Leeds and its immediate vicinity, William needed a way of reaching a larger market and it was another Edwardian development the mail order catalogue, which opened the doors and first exposed Silver Cross to a national audience.

The catalogues went out and the orders came in. Back at the Silver Cross Works, they crated up products and sent them off by road and rail to customer all over the country. Never one to miss an opportunity he knew most of his customers lived in small house with large families, so the design was developed further allowing it to fold away and occupy a relatively small space when not in use.

The Edwardian period saw the Silver Cross Works define the look and style that would define the classic pram shape from most of the 20th Century.

The pram body had the rounded base that characterised the classic boat shape, the folding rain hood, the chassis was placed on four quite large wheels, with the back the smaller of the two. The smooth ride that is still at the forefront of Silver Cross design ethic today, came from William’s unique double ‘cee’ spring design. The two wooden handles were replaced by an elegant curving handle, covered by synthetic material of either white Ivorine or black Ebonite.

At Silver Cross Works, William now had the production methods in place to build the highest quality prams at a price the public could afford.

Our third ‘year in our timeline’ series will uncover life after William Wilson and the hard times that Silver Cross had to overcome through the years after the 1st World War.

This month we managed to catch-up with our Design Director, Phil Taylor who reveals the passion for design that continues to go into every product Silver Cross produce. A passion that can be traced back 135 years to when Silver Cross set about creating the first ever baby carriage.

Since those early days, we’ve become known for our innovation. We’ve brought to market unique prams and pushchairs that have surprised and delighted new parents and helped countless babies feel safe and sound.

Phil was quick to explain that our mission continues to this day; to produce the best! We never make something because it looked the part. Everything we make has to fulfil the need of both parent and child.

He outlined how our design team constantly research and draw inspiration from the latest developments and innovations happening worldwide in fields as diverse as fashion, the automotive industry, sporting equipment and science. He went on to explain how this attention to detail helps Silver Cross continue to be innovative; by sourcing the very best materials, creating wonderfully practical features for comfort and ease of use, and bringing it all together in a beautiful, elegant design which has safety at heart.

Over the coming weeks we will explore further with Phil, the design inspiration behind some of our current products in the Silver Cross range.

We love to hear from our customers, so please let us know what you think here on our blog, Twitter profile or Facebook page.

1877 was an interesting year seeing Tchaikovsky’s first performance of Swan Lake, the beginning of the Wimbledon tennis tournament and Silver Cross was born through the perseverance and entrepreneurship of one man named William Wilson.

William opened his perambulator workshop on Silver Cross Street in Hunslet, Leeds. Inspired by the street name, William named his new company Silver Cross. It was in Silver Cross Street, where his original ethos of uncompromising quality, painstaking craftsmanship, and practical design is still cherished and met to this very day.

We’re extremely proud of our 135 years of history, which is why we are delighted to announce that this is our first entry for our “year in our timeline’ series, where we will explore our long history in more detail.

So who was William before Silver Cross?

William was born in Ferryhill in the County of Durham in 1855, he was the second eldest child of four, making him only 22 years old when had the ambition and drive to open his own workshop. His parents couldn’t afford for him to attend school, which meant at the young age of 8 he began working in a local sawmill (which wasn’t out of the norm in those days!). Showing determination and a strong work ethic, at 14, he was taken as an apprentice in a Sunderland shipyard. Here he learned about technical innovation, design and production, which was the foundation of opening up his own workshop.

After a few years working as a shipyard apprentice, he moved to Hunslet, it was here he began working for Simpson Fawcett making and setting of springs for carriages, the most common spring was the leaf spring. It’s no surprise with all his combined experience he became renowned for incorporating similar suspension techniques used in carriages for perambulators. His designs and method of production are still recognised to this very day, you can see this with our Heritage Collection.

To cap this busy year William married Martha Littlewood from Burley-in-Wharfedale and he made the bold decision to set up his own workshop at the young age of 22 and only after one year in 1878, William took out his first patent for a Hammock Sprung Pram…the rest as they say, is a spectacular history!

Our ‘year in our timeline’ series will explore how William went from strength to strength opening Silver Cross’s first purpose built factory, which would define the classic pram and Silver Cross’s signature style which is recognised around the world today.

Our second installment our Ask-the-Expert with John Horsfall, our in-house, in-car safety expert has carefully considered and answered your questions he received this week. Here are his responses…

Sarah Birchall

Does the 3d carseat fit on the base safely?

Do you still use the seatbelt if the isofix base is used either on the base or the seat?

Do you still need to tilt the carry handle towards the seat or leave it upright whilst travelling?

Hi Sarah,

Check that you have a Ventura Plus Infant Carrier (the weight range on the orange label positioned underneath the infant carrier will read 0-13kg if it is a Ventura Plus). The Ventura Plus Infant Carrier fits onto the 3D chassis. It will also fit onto the Ventura ISOFIX Base.

If you use the Ventura ISOFIX Base fit it as per the manufacturer’s instructions which is connecting the 2 ISOFIX arms on the base to the 2 vehicle ISOFIX points and use the adjustable front support leg. You do not use the vehicle seat belt. Your vehicle/s must be approved in the vehicle application list provided with the base. The Ventura Plus Infant Carrier fastens onto the base using the 4 connection points, make sure they click and lock into position. Again you do not use the vehicle seat belt.

If you fit the Ventura Plus Infant Carrier onto the base, position the handle in the upright position making sure it locks into position.
It is a good idea to have both sets of instructions with you at all times.

I hope I have answered your 3 questions clearly and that everything works out ok.

Kate Holly
I am interested to know why it is thought by your expert that the extended rear facing car seats are difficult to fix. I own a BeSafe seat that is very easy to fix with or without isofix points and it quickly moved between our 2 cars. It also fits easily in a Ford Focus!

Hi Kate,

Group 0+/1 rearward facing car seats are generally more difficult to fit and not as easy to move, two of the reasons why they are not sold in greater numbers. However it is very reassuring to hear that you find your BeSafe easy to install and move, keeping your child rearward facing for as long as possible giving greater safety and support for longer. I think the reason the BeSafe fits into a Ford Focus will probably be due to using less seat belt than the average infant carrier or combination seat. It is good to hear from somebody using a Group0+/1 seat.

Felicity Sharpe
We already have a ventura car seat and 3d pram from our first baby and are considering buying the isofix base for ease of use with our second baby (it wasn’t available when our first was born). I have a Ford Fiesta (2010). This car is not listed on the compatability list, yet it does have isofix fittings. Would the base fit? Thanks

Hi Felicity,

Check that you have a Ventura Plus ( the weight range on the orange label positioned underneath the infant carrier will read 0- 13kg if it is a Ventura Plus). It is designed to fit on to the Ventura ISOFIX Base. Your Ford Fiesta is listed in the vehicle application list. It lists the Ford Fiesta from 2008 onwards which should include your 2010 Ford Fiesta. The vehicle application could be clearer as it only states (From Year) at the top of page 3) Reference C. I hope everything is OK.

Sam Boswell
I have the navigator sport sat patiently in our wardrobe! My daughter is 3 and just over 13kg. What is the safety reason behind the 15kg weight please. P.s. she is quite tall for her age

Hi Sam,

The starting weight for the Navigator Sport to comply with ECE R44.04 is 15kg. If the seat were to be used under this weight it would not be approved.

The results of testing will be applicable to a dummy weighing a minimum of 15kg You must also consider your child’s height, the diagonal section of the vehicle seat belt must pass through the red seat belt guide level or just above the shoulder (not clipping your child’s ears)! The lap section of the vehicle seat belt must be correctly positioned across your child’s pelvic area.

Jo
Moved to Australia and brought our baby seat with us only to find it doesn’t comply with safety standards here. Would be useful for some way of adapting it to be considered. We haven’t had any use out of ours here

Hi Jo,

Unfortunately the Australian regulations are different to the European standards. You would have to produce a product specifically for the Australian market and this would have to be approved to the Australian standards.

Shell Hodgson
Does the Ventura isofix base fit a 53plate astra? If not then why? Can’t change my car so next time I’ll be forced to come away from silvercross if it doesn’t fit.

Hi Shell,

The Ventura ISOFIX Base Vehicle Application List lists a Vauxhall Astra from 2004 onwards. It may be that the 53 plate Astra has not got ISOFIX points.

Vickie Thomas
I have been told that isofix isnt as safe as using the seatbelt because of tje seat having no movement in the case of a crash. Is this true?? Im also put off by the sheer cost of the base, its more than the carseat.

Hi Vickie,

Generally ISOFIX is considered to be safer than the seat belt. Both systems if used and installed correctly are suitable. An added attraction of the ISOFIX system is its ease of use and therefore less likely to be installed incorrectly.

Fiona Thompson
We have just tested our silvercross ventura car seat in our 2006 vauxhall corsa but have found we cannot switch off the front airbags. Can the car seat be used on the back seat rear facing without an isofix base or do we need to invest in one? Also if we do have to invest in one, will the base be compatible with our car?

Hi Fiona,

You are correct in not using your Ventura child car seat with an active front passenger airbag. You must not use any rearward facing child car seat with an active front airbag it is very dangerous and it is also illegal. You can fit the Ventura child car seat without the ISOFIX Base using the vehicles 3 point lap & diagonal seat belt as long as it is compatible with your vehicle and fitted correctly. I would recommend that you visit a retailer and try the seat in the rear of your Vauxhall Corsa to make sure that it is suitable.

Lucy Weekes
Are rear facing car seats the safest for older children too? i have a 9 month old and currently have the silver cross ventura seat. i know she can stay in it til she is 29lbs, but i don’t know what to get next? thanks.

Hi Lucy,

Rearward facing is safer than forward facing so the longer you can have your child rearward facing the better. There are Group 1 child car seats 9kg to 18kg (approximately 9months to 4 years) that rearward face. If you look on www.rearfacing.co.uk it talks about the merits of rearward facing and suitable retailers.

Amy Petch
Ive got the ventura and was wondering do u have to change seat at max weight or can u keep baby in aslong as head isnt over the top regardless of weight?

Hi Amy,

You must not use any seat if your baby has exceeded the maximum weight.

Emma Roberts
Hi i was just wandering whether extended rear facing car seats are something that silver cross are going to be looking into in the near future as i like others would like to keep my little one rear facing for as long as possible.

Hi Emma,

Silver Cross are always looking at the child car seat market and considering the various options in their range of child car seats, however, there is nothing available at the moment.

Kayleigh Thain
asked about ERF seats and why silver cross don’t sell one…your answer did not really answer my question. I did not want a 0/1 rear facing seat, I was asking about a group one extended rear facing seat. No one carries their group one forward facing seat around with them so I wouldn’t expect to do that with a rear facing one. Surely that they are not widely available would be a good reason to sell one, especially given the increasing interest in extended rear facing.

Hi Kayleigh,

There are Group 1 rearward facing seats already on the market, and they are not designed to be removed or carried on a regular basis. If you visit www.rearfacing.co.uk this will give you information on this type of seat and availability through specialized retailers. The market demand for this type of seat is still small but Silver Cross are always looking at the child car seat market and considering various options in their range of child car seats. There is nothing available through Silver Cross at the moment, but we are always looking at developing for the future.

Our in-house, in-car safety expert John Horsfall has carefully considered and answered your questions he received this week. Here are his responses…

Danielle McLymont
When is it okay to remove the newborn head hugger? When should I stop using the Ventura car seat; when my child reaches the maximum weight or when the top of their head reaches the top of the car seat ?

Hi Danielle,

Keep the newborn head hugger in for as long as possible. It might help if you remove the foam wedge and just use the head support in the latter stages. You should stop using the Ventura Plus child car seat when either you have reached the maximum weight (13kg) or your baby’s head reaches the top of the car seat whichever comes first. Make sure the harness is fitted correctly either level or just below your baby’s shoulders. If your baby still fits the Ventura Plus correctly I would recommend that you use the seat for as long as possible, rearward facing is safer than forward facing. The physical development of your child should be taken into consideration. Your child must be able to sit up for a long period of time sitting comfortably with confidence. You might consider a combination seat which would allow you to keep your child rearward facing in a bigger environment but the same weight and height rules as the Ventura Plus Infant Carrier will still apply.

Frances Kellett
My question is how can I help my youngest babys head from polling in her Ventura? Had to remove head bugger as her head is too big and has been from about 4 weeks! At the moment I have a flannel either side of her head to support whilst sleeping but think there must b a better way and if not then there’s a gap in the market!?

Hi Frances,

If you have not already done so removing the foam wedge could give you more room for the head hugger. Your baby must be big enough for you to do this. It is not advisable to add anything as it may come out in an accident situation.

Kayleigh Thain
Why do you not sell an extended rear facing car seat?

Hi Kayleigh,

Unfortunately the Group 0+/1 rearward facing child car seats are not widely sold in the UK. They are not designed to be removed from the vehicle and are generally more difficult to fit. Silver Cross are always researching the child car seat market but at the moment they do not have such a seat in their range.

Elaine ‘Flynn’ Gernon
Does the isofix base only work with the Ventura car seat or can you buy a bigger car seat to fit the base once baby has outgrown the Ventura seat?

Hi Elaine,

The Ventura ISOFIX Base is only designed to fit the Ventura Plus & Ventura Plus S child car seats.

Sam Cruse
Same question as Kayleigh, any plans for a stage 1 rear facing car seat?

Hi Sam,

As mentioned to Kayleigh, unfortunately the Group 0+/1 rearward facing child car seats are not widely sold in the UK. They are not designed to be removed from the vehicle and are generally more difficult to fit. Silver Cross are always researching the child car seat market but at the moment they do not have such a seat in their range.

Imelda Bradley
Does the isofix base fit in the back row seats of a 2005 crysler voyager? I’m not anywhere near a shop to try it before I but it. Reason I ask is that the back rite seats are graduated seats. Prob not right phrasing, but the seats aren’t straight, they dip toward the back. Ive 5 kids and need to find best positioning for each child so they are all comfortable.

Hi Imelda,

The Ventura ISOFIX Base does have a Vehicle Application List with the product and you must make sure that your vehicle is listed. I have checked the list and it does list a Chrysler Voyager 2001 onwards. I would always recommend that you “Try before you buy” to make sure the product is suitable.

Catherine Edwards
Like our ventura seat, only probs we had were the clicking noise of the hood would wake baby! Would also ask why the straps don’t have a higher slot please? We could’ve had the kids in it for far longer but the straps didn’t go high enough (but there are an extra set of holes in the back of the shell but they can’t be used?) The straps for the Sleepover when in buggy mode are too short too. Loved them both on the whole though

Hi Catherine,

Unfortunately there is a clicking noise associated with the hood adjustment but hopefully there will be a firmness in the hoods position. The shoulder straps have 2 positions only to comply with the relevant standards. The 3rd slot is deliberately blocked off to avoid this position being used.

Louise Crane
My son is 14 weeks and 16lbs, too big for both the carry cot and car seat on our 3d (what we’re left with is an expensive pushchair) what are our options for a car seat now?

Hi Louise,

If your son is too big for the car seat (your retailer will be able to confirm this) I would suggest a combination seat that is suitable for your vehicle/s (in both groups) and your child so that he can remain rearward facing up to the minimum weight of 9kgs before forward facing can be considered. If you can continue rearward facing usually up to 13kgs (check the seat) and make sure your child’s head is not taller than the seat back, it would be safer.

Caroline Haldane Fallow
We have ordered our linear freeway pram and have went to buy the vebtura car seat to match but the car seat is too big for the car seat belt to fit round, very disappointing and now heard of a few people with this problem- this has made us consider changing the pram and silver cross obviously lost the sale of a car seat- is the shop assistant not fitting it correctly or is this a typical problem as the car seat is more bulky than others? Our car is a 06 focus. its really disappointing. Thank you

Hi Caroline,
Unfortunately the Ford Focus vehicles are known to have short seat belts and this can be a problem when trying to fit child car seats. There is the possibility of purchasing a Ventura ISOFIX Base (If your vehicle has ISOFIX points fitted and your vehicle is approved in the Vehicle Application List supplied with the Base). This may be a possibility to overcome short seat belts. You must check that there is not a floor storage compartment, you cannot rest a front support leg on a compartment lid.

Fran Perkins
My daughter is 17wks and also to tall for the pram liner and carseat, she only weighs 13lb.

Hi Fran,

If this is the situation I would suggest a visit to your retailer to have this confirmed.

@MorvenMcPherson
Would my Ventura Plus car seat only fit into the SilverCross Ventura ISOFIX base? Thanks in advance.

Hi Morven,

Yes your Ventura Plus infant carrier will only fit the Ventura ISOFIX Base.

Samantha Dawe
Do car seats have an expiry date or is it just a way for companies to make more money? Also when can you use a high back booster from?

Hi Samantha,

Some child car seat manufacturers may have expiry dates. It is always advisable to have a child car seat that complies with the current up to date standard (Presently R44.03 or R44.04). You can use a high back booster from a minimum weight of 15kgs (33lbs). Also check your child’s height is suitable.

Chloë Ross
I would like to know what is safer the isofix or just your regular seat belt to install?

Hi Chloë,

The ISOFIX is considered to be safer and also the seat is more likely to be fitted correctly.

Kate Bellairs
I want to know if in their personal opinion do they think extended rear facing is safer? If so what age do they think a child should preferably rear face until and do they pass this information on when asked by parents. Thanks x

Hi Kate,

Rearward facing is considered to be safer. You can now buy seats that are rearward facing in Groups 0+/1 (Approximately from birth to 4 years). Rearward facing for longer is commonly used in Scandinavian countries but the seats are not designed to be taken out of the vehicle on a regular basis and are generally more difficult to fit.

Kim Ridger
My son is growing out of his infant seat rather rapidly and we’re looking for something that is easy to move between cars preferably not iso-fix. would like to know what seat they’d recommend?

Hi Kim,

I would advise a visit to a retailer with a wide range of seats to choose from and the facility to try the seat before you buy. There are seats on the market that would fit your requirements but the best seat for your vehicle/s will always be the one that fits correctly and is suitable for your child.

Erin Ardis
I have maxi cosi cabriofix seats for my twins, approximately what age/weight will they have to go into the next stage seat? x

Hi Erin,

The maximum weight for the Cabriofix is 13kg (29lbs). See orange label on seat. The maximum height of your child is decided by the position of the head. It must not be above the top of the infant carrier seat back. The child’s physical development needs to be considered, your child should be sitting up independently for a long period of time, sitting in comfort and with confidence.

Ruth Strong
Hi, I’m looking for a seat that is easy to move between a few different cars, it also needs to be easy to sercure for the grandparents. My son is 1, which ones would you recommend? Also, I have the Maxi Cosi Opal because it rear faces up to… 13kg, my son is 10kg at the mo so we’ll get a few more months use from it. But I am looking for a rear facing seat for up to 4yrs, which one would you recommend? I’m struggling to find much info on british stockists and reviewers. Thanks in advance

Hi Ruth,

The best child car seat is the one that fits your vehicle/s. There are a wide range of child car seats available and I would suggest that you visit a retailer with a wide range and the expert knowledge of child in car safety. You can purchase child car seats that rearward face in Groups 0+/1 and a useful website to visit would be www.rearfacing.co.uk

Laura Harbidge
I have a britax babysafe, is this ok to fit in the front of a mercedees SLK with the airbag disabled?

Hi Laura,

If you are considering fitting a rearward facing infant carrier in the front seat I would recommend that you get confirmation from the vehicle manufacturer that it is okay to do this with the front passenger airbag turned off. The Britax Babysafe Infant Carrier is approved to the relevant safety standards, a well respected child car seat and is widely available.

Emma
My daughter is 6 months old and is tall for her age but light only 6.1kg . Her feet are starting to touch the chair back when she is in her Ventura car seat. Will she need to cross her legs or can we move up to the next size of seat before she is 9kg? Thank you

Hi Emma,

The position of your child’s head in the infant carrier is the most important consideration when judging your child’s length, not the legs. The head must not be above the top of the infant carrier seat back. It is important that your child remains rearward facing for as long as possible but do not exceed the seat’s maximum weight & height.

Mel and Paul
We have purchased the silver cross surf with the Ventura S car seat. Can you please inform me if it will fit in a Ford Focus Zetec Climate TDCi, registered 2007 on a 06 plate, on the back seat. We have heard from friends that the seat belt is not long enough and also the car will not support the ISOFIX base. Can you please shed some light on this.

Hi Mel and Paul,

Unfortunately the Ford Focus range does suffer from short seatbelts. If the seat belt is too short you might have been able to consider the Ventura ISOFIX Base but if your vehicle has not got ISOFIX points a base can not be a consideration. It is worth asking the vehicle dealer if ISOFIX points can be fitted. If so the base could then be an option as long as it is approved.
