Flying with a new born baby is a potentially stressful not to mention SCARY experience for any new parent. Worrying over your baby’s health and your own sanity are all common stresses. So far, so bad – but not too worry, all of us at Silver Cross HQ have put together a simple guide to making your baby’s first flight as easy for you as possible. Sit back, relax, seat belts on and ready for a smooth flight.
Are We There Yet?!:
- Allow plenty of time at the airport for check-in, and, if necessary, connecting flights.
- Ask if your flight is full when checking in as sometimes assistants will give you the adjacent seat. This is particularly helpful if you’ve opted to travel with a child under 24 months without a seat.
- Boarding first and leaving increases your chances of getting help from the cabin crew.
- Always ask if there are any fast tracks at customs for those with infants.
- Taking off and landing is the time your little one is most likely to cry. (Due to the cabin pressure change.) You can avoid this by feeding them a bottle which will stop there ears ‘popping’ and your ears bleeding!
I’m Hungry!
- If you remember, then pick-up some disposable bibs (so much easier!).
- Ask for bottles or meals to be warmed well in advance as facilities vary on planes and the process can take quite along time.
But always test the food temperature before you give it your child!
I’m Bored!
- By gift-wrapping toys you can increase their entertainment and create a little ‘wow factor’. Remember, don’t fully wrap them as you might need to show security staff what’s inside.
- Assuming you don’t have a portable DVD player or iPad (though they’re pretty handy) then just brace yourself for watching a lot of kids TV. However, putting-up with a happy Iggle Piggle is much easier than dealing with a moody child.

Thanks for these tips – I’ve found them very helpful when planning a trip out with my 2 year old daughter – it can all be a little daunting trying to remember everything and making sure your little one doesn’t have time to be bored!
